The gold content in the mined ears varies widely. In general, gold ore that is mined underground must hold a content of approximately 3 grams of gold per tonne to be profitable, while open-pit ore may have lower content. Much of the world’s gold is produced in quarries that are mined for ores with gold content between 1 and 4 grams per tonne.
Australia is the country with the largest known gold reserves. South Africa comes second, followed by Russia.
